Friendship Lamps connect to the internet using your home WiFi network. Most setup issues happen because of common network settings, but they are usually easy to fix.
Below are a few things to check if you're having trouble connecting your lamp.
1. Your Network Must Support 2.4GHz WiFi
Friendship Lamps connect to 2.4GHz WiFi networks.
Most modern routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. In many homes these networks are combined under one name.
In most cases this works automatically. If setup fails, you may need to temporarily connect your phone to a 2.4GHz network.
π See our guide: How to Tell if Your WiFi Is 2.4GHz or 5GHz
2. Your Phone Must Be on the Same WiFi Network During Setup
When connecting your lamp, the phone running the Friendship Lamp app must be connected to the same WiFi network you want the lamp to use.
If your phone is connected to:
β’ cellular data
β’ a different WiFi network
β’ a guest network
the setup may fail.
3. The Lamp Must Be Set Up at Its Final Location
WiFi setup must be done in the home where the lamp will be used.
You cannot connect a lamp to someone else's WiFi remotely. The person with the lamp will need to complete setup while connected to their local network.
4. Some Networks May Block Smart Devices
Certain networks have security settings that prevent devices like Friendship Lamps from connecting.
This is common on:
β’ dorm or campus networks
β’ apartment or shared building WiFi
β’ workplace networks
β’ public WiFi
If this happens, you may need to use a home router or personal hotspot, or ask the network administrator to allow the device.
5. Restarting Your Router Can Fix Many Issues
If your lamp was previously working but suddenly went offline, restarting your router can often fix the problem.
Unplug your router.
Wait 30 seconds.
Plug it back in.
Wait a few minutes for your internet to reconnect.
Your lamp should reconnect automatically once the network is available again.
6. Your Lamp Can Remember Two WiFi Networks
Friendship Lamps can store two WiFi networks at the same time.
This is helpful if you move the lamp between locations, such as a home and vacation house. Once both networks are saved, the lamp will reconnect automatically when it returns to either location.
