Yes! You can connect a Friendship Lamp before gifting it to confirm that it powers on, comes online, and responds to touch.
However, the lamp will still need to be connected to the recipient’s Wi-Fi after it arrives. You also will not be able to test communication between the lamps until they have been claimed and added to the same group.
What can I test before gifting the lamp?
You can:
- Plug in the lamp and confirm that it powers on
- Connect it temporarily to your Wi-Fi
- Confirm that it comes online
- Touch the lamp and confirm that the touch sensor responds
- Check for visible damage or other physical problems
This verifies that the individual lamp is working.
Can I test whether the two lamps communicate?
Not yet.
The lamps can only send touches to one another after:
- Each lamp has been claimed
- Both lamps have been added to the same group
- Both lamps are connected to the internet
Before that, touching the gift lamp only confirms that its touch sensor is working.
Use “Setup Lamp for a Friend”
When using your phone to test or configure someone else’s lamp, select:
WiFi Setup → Setup Lamp for a Friend
This helps prevent the gift lamp from replacing the lamp currently linked to your app.
Follow the setup prompts to connect the gift lamp to your Wi-Fi temporarily.
What happens when the recipient receives the lamp?
The recipient will need to:
- Download the Friendship Lamps App
- Connect the lamp to their own Wi-Fi
- Claim the lamp using its Lamp ID
- Join or create the intended group
- Test communication between the lamps
Connecting the lamp to a different Wi-Fi network does not erase its settings by itself.
Important information about claiming and groups
If a lamp is claimed by an account that is not already part of its current group, the lamp will be removed from that group.
The lamp will then need to be invited to the intended group again.
Because of this, the simplest option is usually to let the recipient claim the lamp and join the group after it arrives.
Does the lamp need a subscription?
Most Friendship Lamps and Frames do not require a subscription for normal lamp-to-lamp communication.
FriendLi lamps require an active subscription for each FriendLi lamp.
Optional subscription features for other models may include Remote Touch, phone notifications, Circles, and Extended Warranty coverage.
