If your Friendship Lamp lights up on its own, sends touches unexpectedly, or seems to react when no one is touching it, this is usually caused by touch-sensor calibration or something in the lamp’s environment affecting the sensor.
Use the steps below to troubleshoot.
1. Restart the lamp
The touch sensor calibrates every time the lamp powers on.
- Unplug the lamp.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Plug it back in.
- Do not touch the lamp while it is starting up.
- Wait for the startup lights to finish.
If the lamp is touched during startup, the sensor may calibrate incorrectly and react unexpectedly afterward.
2. Check the lamp’s placement
Certain surfaces or nearby objects can interfere with the touch sensor.
Try moving the lamp away from:
- Metal surfaces
- Power strips
- Large electronics
- Thick walls of cords behind or against the lamp
- Wet or damp surfaces
- Other objects touching the lamp
- Decorative items resting against the lamp or frame
After moving the lamp, unplug it for 10 seconds and plug it back in so the sensor can recalibrate in the new location.
3. Check the power cord
A power cord pressing against the lamp or touch-sensitive area can sometimes affect the sensor.
Make sure:
- The cord is fully connected
- The cord is not bent tightly against the lamp
- The cord is not touching the touch-sensitive area
- The cord is not damaged
If possible, gently reposition the cord and restart the lamp.
4. Make sure the lamp is not being touched accidentally
Sometimes the lamp may be triggered by something making light contact with the touch-sensitive area.
Check for:
- Curtains or fabric brushing against it
- Decorative objects touching it
- Pets
- Nearby hands or arms resting against it
- Another lamp or object pressing into it during storage or display
5. Test the lamp in a different location
Move the lamp to a different outlet or surface and test it there.
This helps rule out interference from:
- The original surface
- Nearby electronics
- Outlet or power-strip issues
- Environmental factors around the lamp
After moving it, restart the lamp again and watch whether the behavior continues.
6. Check whether the light is actually a touch from another lamp
If the lamp lights up unexpectedly, it may not be a phantom touch. Another lamp in the group may have sent a touch.
To check:
- Ask the other people in the group whether they touched their lamp
- Confirm whether the lamp is only receiving touches or also sending them on its own
- Review whether the timing matches activity from someone else in the group
If the lamp is only receiving touches, the lamp itself may be working normally.
7. Watch for repeated behavior
Take note of:
- Whether it happens at the same time every day
- Whether it happens only after restarting
- Whether it happens only in one location
- Whether it happens when using a certain outlet or power strip
- Whether it happens while the cord is positioned a certain way
Patterns like these can help identify the cause.
8. If the lamp also will not respond correctly to touch
If the lamp lights up on its own and does not respond properly when you intentionally touch it, follow:
Why Isn’t My Friendship Lamp Responding to Touch?
The two problems can sometimes be related to sensor calibration or placement.
Still lighting up on its own?

- Your Lamp ID or a photo of the label on the bottom of the lamp
- The lamp model
- A short video showing the behavior, if possible
- Whether the lamp is sending touches, receiving touches, or both
- Whether it happens in more than one location
- Whether you have already tried restarting and moving the lamp
