Yes — you can test the lamp before gifting it but there are a few important things to understand about Wi-Fi setup and account ownership.
What You Can Do Before Sending It
If the lamp is shipped to you first, you can:
✔ Plug it in and make sure it powers on
✔ Temporarily connect it to your Wi-Fi to confirm it works
✔ Test the touch sensor
This is a great way to make sure everything is functioning before you send it.
What You Cannot Do
You cannot connect the lamp to your loved one’s Wi-Fi remotely.
Wi-Fi setup must be done:
In person
On the same Wi-Fi network that the lamp will use
With someone physically present with the lamp
If they live across the country (or world), they’ll need to complete Wi-Fi setup themselves once it arrives.
Important: Should I Claim the Lamp to My Account?
We recommend not claiming the lamp to your account if it’s meant for someone else.
Here’s why:
When a lamp is claimed (registered), it becomes linked to that account.
If the new owner later claims it to their account, ownership transfers.
Any previous group connection may need to be set up again.
For the smoothest experience, the best approach is:
👉 Let the new owner register (claim) the lamp to their own account first.
👉 Then send them a group invite.
This avoids ownership transfers and repeated setup steps.
Recommended Gifting Flow
Send the lamp.
They connect it to their Wi-Fi.
They register it to their own Friendship Lamp account.
You send them a group invite.
They accept — and you’re connected 💛
When Would I Claim It First?
You may choose to claim it first if:
You want to fully test group functionality.
You’re setting it up for someone who isn’t comfortable with technology.
Just know that if they later claim it to their own account, you may need to re-invite them to the group.
